Approximately 80 new childcare spaces have been created in Saskatchewan with support from the Métis Nation–Saskatchewan (MN–S) Government Family Childcare Program.

In March 2025, two new grants were introduced for Métis citizens who operate or plan to open regulated home childcare. The Métis family childcare home start up grant (including group homes) provides funding up to $35,000 to create new childcare spaces, while the home operating grant offers up to $15,000 to enhance their current childcare operations. These initiatives complement the long running Child Care Subsidy program, which helps eligible working Métis families access affordable childcare for as low as $10/day.

Lloydminster’s Raelynn Falcon received the Operating Grant and said, “The Metis Nation–Saskatchewan operating grant has significantly improved my home and childcare space. Working from home is very rewarding, but it can pose challenges in terms of storage, cleaning, and overall functionality, especially with so many people in a small environment.”

The grant enabled Raelynn to improve the childcare environment by adding storage space and replacing old, drafty windows with energy-efficient panes. She was also able to purchase outdoor equipment, STEM toys, and environmental materials. Reflecting on the support, Raelynn noted, “The improvements have transformed the childcare space, enhancing the comfort of my day home for both the children and my family.”

Similarly, Regina-based provider Savannah Cannon utilized the MN–S Start Up Grant to elevate her business. “This funding allowed me to purchase essential items that turned the environment into a safe, engaging, and nurturing space,” Cannon shared.

The grant monies allowed Savannah to make some upgrades including the noticeable additions of a couch, tables, chairs, and storage cabinets. And some less noticeable augmentations like musical instruments, animal sets, puzzles, dress-up clothes, shelving, dolls, and a range of arts and crafts supplies.

She was also able to tighten up the clerical end of the business by purchasing things like a printer, laminator, filing cabinet, and administrative app.

Savannah says the grant has both enhanced the children’s experience in her care and bought her peace of mind organizationally. “It enabled me to buy many of the “wants” in addition to just the necessary items, giving me the freedom to create the dream space I have always envisioned without limitations.”
