Language & Identity

Welcome to Language and Identity at Métis Nation–Saskatchewan. Our team is dedicated to revitalizing and preserving the rich linguistic heritage of the Métis people. Since the birth of Our Nation, Métis have been multilingual, speaking the languages of our neighbours and trading partners alongside our own languages. This multilingualism was crucial to our success during the fur trade era and continues to be a key part of our identity today.

We are committed to breathing new life into critically endangered languages like Michif French, Heritage Michif, and Northern Michif - while also embracing Cree and Dene as part of our cultural tapestry. Through education, community initiatives, and cultural programming, we strive to ensure that these languages continue to be spoken and celebrated for generations to come.
