Medical Travel Assistance Program

Accessing necessary medical care can require significant travel for many Métis citizens across Saskatchewan. The Medical Travel Assistance Program (MTAP) provides financial assistance to eligible Métis Nation-Saskatchewan (MN-S) citizens who must travel within Saskatchewan to access medically necessary services that are not available in their home community.

MTAP is intended to supplement, not replace, available federal, provincial, or other funding sources. Funding approvals are based on eligibility, medical need, urgency, and available program resources. Meeting eligibility requirements does not guarantee funding approval.

Who Is Eligible? 

Applicants must:

• Be a registered Métis Nation-Saskatchewan citizen
• Require travel within Saskatchewan to access medical care unavailable in their home community
• Have a household income below $150,000 annually
• Submit an official appointment or admission notice at least five (5) days before travel
• Provide confirmation of attendance or discharge following their appointment
• Complete the MTAP Intake Form and provide required documentation, including proof of citizenship and income verification. 

Important Eligibility Information

MTAP is intended as a support program for citizens who do not have access to other medical travel funding options. Individuals receiving SIS or SAID are not eligible, as medical travel assistance is available through those programs.

**Applicants are encouraged to explore all available funding options before applying to MTAP.  

What The Program Covers

Eligible support may include: 

• Transportation assistance for approved medical travel
• Accommodation support when medically necessary
• Meal allowances for eligible travel
• Support for travel to primary care, specialist, referral, cancer, dialysis, and traditional healing appointments
• Emergency ambulance expenses, where eligible 

Annual Funding Maximums 

Medical Appointments (Primary Care, Specialist, Referral, Traditional Healers)

• Northern Saskatchewan residents: up to $1,500 per year
• Central/Southern Saskatchewan residents: up to $1,000 per year 

Cancer and Dialysis Appointments 

• Northern Saskatchewan residents: up to $6,500 per year
• Central/Southern Saskatchewan residents: up to $4,000 per year 

Emergency Ambulance Support 

• Northern Saskatchewan residents: up to $2,000 per year
• Central/Southern Saskatchewan residents: up to $1,200 per year 

Meal Allowances

• Day Trip: $25
• Overnight Trip: $50
• Weekly Maximum: $250
• Monthly Maximum: $500 

Citizens will be reimbursed fuel costs based on distance travelled by vehicle. You do not need to provide receipts for fuel reimbursement.

Escorts

An escort may be approved when: 

• The patient is unable to drive themselves
• The patient is an Elder (60+)
• Translation or interpretation support is required
• Cognitive barriers necessitate assistance during travel and appointments 

What MTAP Does Not Cover

MTAP does not cover: 

• Travel for services available within the applicant's home community
• Medical travel outside Saskatchewan
• Prescription medications
• Medical supplies or equipment
• Doctor's note fees
• Compassionate travel
• Funeral expenses
• Accommodation requests submitted fewer than five (5) days before travel
• Vienna House stays or accommodations not approved under current program guidelines
