Métis Elders

This is a space to celebrate and pay tribute to our Elders, Li vyeu moond (old ones), who actively transmit the living wisdom and knowledge of our people. They are guardians of Métis language, culture, and our ancestral practices like hunting, gathering, and medicine foraging. As deeply involved and respected teachers, Elders hold a sacred place within Métis Nation–Saskatchewan. Individuals are invited to explore this space, to listen and learn from Elders, Li vyeu moond (old ones) who were and continue to be instrumental in shaping the Métis Nation–Saskatchewan we know today.

Interacting with our Elders, Li vyeu moond (old ones), calls for adherence to protocols rooted in respect and honour. Always address Knowledge Carriers with the highest regard using Mr., Mrs., Uncle, Auntie, Mooshom, or Kookom, according to their preference. Permission must first be granted to share any information or stories connected to Elders, Li vyeu moond (old ones), and always acknowledge their contributions when doing so. It is customary to offer a small gift or honorarium as a token of gratitude for their shared wisdom and knowledge. In public settings, Elders are always acknowledged and served first at mealtime.

Moreover, if an Elder is leading an opening or closing prayer, always remain respectful and attentive to their words. To interact respectfully with our Elders, Li vyeu moond (old ones), it is essential that you take the time to learn and internalize the proper protocols. This commitment to understanding and upholding standards of honour will positively guide your interactions.
